Gardening

Wow, It's been ages since my last post here. I've just been preoccupied with lots of springtime activities. On top of my normal daytime chores I've been gardening like crazy too. We made a victory garden at Mom's this year and I started a salad table that my father-in-law made me. The victory garden is going great! We have corn, 2 varieties of beans, peas, okra, brussel sprouts, 2 varieties of tomatoes, onions, spinach, romaine lettuce, regular lettuce, green peppers, squash, sunflowers, zinnias, strawberries, watermelon, and cantaloupe. Most of them are doing amazingly great, it's too early to tell on the melons though. My salad table didn't do as well though. Some sort of animal kept getting into it until it ate everything in it. I'm hoping to start it back again this weekend, maybe get some chicken wire to put over it. I would have thought I'd have had more trouble out of the garden at Mom's than the table, with animals anyway. It's weird... We ate produce out of it for the first time on Thursday. We had salads with the lettuce, tomato, and onions fresh from the garden. It was DELISH! Lily loves working in the garden. She helps me weed, dig, and pick. Her favorite is the strawberries. She keeps a close eye on them in case any turn red.
I wrote this for some women Knoxmoms for anyone needing help honing their green thumb. I'll post it here too, in case any of you are interested in starting a garden of your own.

If you didn’t in the fall, right now is the time to start getting your soil ready for planting. There are a few different approaches to doing this. Some people like to just plant straight into the ground. There are a few options to do this depending on how big of a space your planting in and your resources. Options include hand digging with a spade or shovel, tilling with a power rotary tiller, and using a small garden tractor or a full-sized farm tractor. Since I’m assuming most reading this blog will be new to gardening, I will assume you do not have access to a tractor. Rototilling is sufficient for most home gardens. Rotary tilling mixes the upper layers of soil rather than completely turning the soil over. You can just rent a rototiller from a local equipment company for fairly inexpensive.
Small gardens can be really successful using raised beds, which may be worked entirely by hand if the area is small enough. I personally am working in a raised bed. Here’s a link to building a raised bed http://www.thegardenhelper.com/bed~const.html and here’s a link to buy a ready made one http://www.eartheasy.com/grow_raised_beds.htm It’s really not too hard and in the end is easier to maintain. They’re easier to keep critters out, you don’t have to worry about soil compaction, they drain away excess water better, and studies have shown that raised garden beds produce 1.4 to 2 times as much vegetables and flowers per square foot as ordinary beds.
Now for starting your seeds… I think I’ve already mentioned in a previous gardening post that I have been saving egg cartons for planting in. Well I got to thinking why just stop at the cartons? I decided to be really green and use the actual eggshell as well. Which seems like it will work out well, because when they’re ready to be planted all I will have to do is crack the shell and set it in the ground. Shell and all! With ALL the eggshells and cartons I still ran out of space to plant my seeds so I had to go to the garden center and purchase more containers for planting. I decided to go with the peat pots because they’re biodegradable. I have to say though, I do much prefer the egg cartons and shells because when wet they become very flimsy.
I have searched A LOT of stores and I’ve found the BEST place to buy your seeds is at ACE Hardware. Their seed packets are HUGE for the price! I got a gigantic package of okra for $3.50 and my corn (hybrid) for $5.00. My other smaller, but still big packets of seeds cost around $1.75.
I started my seeds yesterday. It’s pretty easy. You just fill up your pots with dirt (seed starting soil.) Then plant them to the appropriate depth (back of package) and water. Make sure you either keep your seeds inside (in a warm area with sunlight) or covered in plastic outside. They need sunlight or an artificial light (a 48’’ fluorescent shop light will work fine) everyday and plenty of water. Keep them moist! The ideal temperature for them to be in is around 70 degrees. Some people I know like to put a heating pad (wet/dry pad) underneath their seeds to keep their seeds warm. I’ve found this blog really helpful http://www.getrichslowly.org/blog/2009/03/06/starting-seeds-indoors-jump-start-your-garden-today/
I also found a catalog at Three Rivers Food Co-Op that is really helpful. It’s called Southern Exposure Seed Exchange. It has different organic seeds and and it has lots of guidelines to go buy inside. It shows what is started by seeds or transplants. It has growth cycles, recommended temps, light requirements, germination periods, sun/shade requirements, and how and when to plant. Very helpful!!!
I hope this has helped some people having trouble. If you any more questions or have anything to add please post! Happy gardening!

Valentines Day!

We had lots of during Valentines Day! On Thursday we headed to GymBugs and the kids had an absolute blast! They completely fell in love with Gymbugs and played with all the kids and toys that were there. Later that afternoon, we headed back to Mimi's for a Valentine's Day party she was having for the kids. She decorated it so cute! Lily, Rowan, and Brie really loved it. We made made cupcakes for them to eat and they made homemade Valentines after they ate. On actual Valentines Day, Mimi babysat while Daddy and Mommy got to go see a movie. We went to see Taken, and it was pretty good. I at least know what to make my kids watch someday when they ask me to go somewhere far away alone. ; )

Zoo Day!

We went to the zoo a couple of weeks ago and the kids have not stopped talking about it since. Lily's favorite part of the zoo was the zebra's. I think mainly because of her obsession with Madagascar here lately. She kept naming all the zebra's and one's name was Marty. She was so funny. Rowan loved it so much too! He kept pointing out all the animals and puckering his lips in excitement. Lily made friends with the gorilla there too. She just kept saying, "Hi, I'm Lily! Do you want to be friends? TALK to ME!!!" Everyone at that exhibit kept laughing and saying how cute she was. I think she's rather a stinker!!! Here's some pics of our zoo day!

Recipe for snow cream

When I was growing up we made this every time after it snowed. I loved it so much my grandma, and aunts would all make it for me too. So that I'd have it when I came to their house for a visit.  It's sooo yummy! I couldn't believe Aaron had never had it before and he grew up in Michigan, where it snows all the time! Maybe it's just a southern thing?

Snow Cream

A lot of fresh snow. Probably a gallon's worth
Evaporated milk (Maybe a cup per gallon)
Sugar (1/2 cup per gallon, or to taste)
Vanilla- tablespoon or two per gallon

Make sure you get clean snow. It's best to scoop it off the top of the pile after it has very recently snowed.  Nobody wants dirt in their tasty snow cream. Ewww...

Next fold sugar and vanilla into the snow. Then add the cream a little at a time until you reach the right consistency. It should be a little thinner than ice cream, but not too watery.

Be careful with how warm your cream is also. I always like to refrigerate mine before making snow cream, that way it won't melt too much.

It's something fun to do with the kids, and if you want something a little more interesting you could add a couple of drops of food coloring to it.

Snow Day!!!

It snowed here finally! I think it must have snowed 3-5 inches here and we're so excited! The weatherman said it would rain all day and we weren't expecting it at all. Lily kept going to the door that morning begging us to let her go play in it before it melted. But she's gotten to play in it plenty since then. She's went sledding everyday for the past 3 days, thrown snowballs everywhere, made snow angels all over the yard, and made snow cream. She's living it up!

Fluffy White Icing Recipe

A lot of people have asked me for the recipe for the fluffy white icing I used for the cupcakes at both of the kids parties. It's so yummy! It taste like marshmallows and is so shiny and pretty. So here it is....

      Fluffy White Icing
1 c. granulated sugar
1/3 c. water
1/4 tsp. cream of tartar
Dash of salt
2 unbeaten egg whites
1 tsp. vanilla

Combine sugar, water, cream of tartar and salt in saucepan. Bring to boil, stir until sugar dissolves. Very slowly add mixture to unbeaten egg whites in mixing bowl, beating constantly with mixer until stiff peaks form. Beat in vanilla.

Lily's 3rd Birthday Party!

Lily had a blast at her party on Saturday. It was Backyardigans themed and we had pizza and cake/cupcakes. Everyone seems to love the icing I make for the cupcakes because it tastes like marshmallows. A lot of people ended up getting sick and wasn't able to attend the party. It's just the territory of having a birthday at this time of year. At least it wasn't Lily like it has been her past two birthdays. It actually turned out fine, that there were so few people there. It was a lot less overwhelming for her and less stress for me. We watched Wall-E, opened her goodies, and stuffed ourselves. She got a popup tent, a popup tunnel, sleeping bag set, sidewalk chalks, temporary tattoos for potty training, Toy Story 2, Sleeping Beauty doll, Queen Maleficent doll, A bathing suit and night gown, Slinky Dog, a helmet for her bike, bubbles, and a picnic basket with tea set. She was ecstatic! She slept in her tent that night, watching Toy Story 2, cuddled with her new bear and Maleficent doll. Why she wanted Maleficent is beyond me.... Just in November Maleficent scared her every time we went into the Disney Store. Then after she got Sleeping Beauty for Christmas, she's been going on about how she wanted that doll. Kids can be so funny...

More photos of Lily's party

Lily had a great birthday Friday. I let her sleep in because it was her birthday, knowing how much my girl LOVES her beauty sleep. After Lily woke up and got ready Mimi came over and we all headed out for the day. We went to eat at Panera Bread for lunch, because that's Lily's favorite restuarant! She loves the French Onion soup in a bread bowl there. It's funny, she has very adult taste. She could care less for McDonald's, but don't come between her and her "Anera." Afterwards we went next door to Marble Slab for her potty treat. Mimi treated her to a big sprinkle ice cream cone with Strawberry ice cream, her favorite also. She was so excited! When we finished up there we headed to West Town mall, so I could try to find the Queen Maleficent doll Lilliput wanted for her birthday. I was afraid I might not find one there, but score! I found one on sale for 50 percent off, $7.99!!! So I got her the doll and then we went to the play area with the kids. Boy, they LOVE going to the play area. Rowan's gotten really into it,and he gets around pretty well in there now. He played with some older boys and figured out how to climb up the slide all by himself and slide down. I love the play area because they love it, but I'm a big germaphobe! The whole time I sit and figure out when we'll be in the clear from getting sick from being in there. I didn't used to be like that until I had Lily, and got the stomach virus for the first time after becoming a mom. Boy, few things cause such chills down my spine as the thought of a stomach virus raging through the household. Ughh...  Anyways, back to the birthday, Lily was beside herself when she walked over to Libby Lou's and discovered them completely empty and closed. She teared up and said "it's ruined!" I decided to divert her attention by pulling out her coupon for Build a Bear. She decided to spend the money she had been saving on building her first Build a Bear. It's such a cute bear. She decided to put her in all Hello Kitty wear and she HAD to have big girl panties just like her. Lil's favorite part of building the bear was washing her in the tub there. She must have went back 5 times to wash her. She was so proud to pay her own money on the bear too. She made sure she was the one who handed the girl her money. She was so proud walking out with her new bear!

Mamaw Prizey brought over the kids Christmas presents from the that side of the family's gathering we missed this year. They got some great gifts. Lily got a digital camera, some clothes, a Barbie Mariposa laptop, dress up clothes, and books. Rowan got a lot of clothes, Little People airplane, and a teddy bear. They loved all their presents! Thank you to everyone who sent them something! They always love Mamaw Prizey's visits because she always brings them prizes. That's how she got her name, Lily just started calling her that one day. I love to get to see Mamaw too. One of my resolutions this year was to go to see her more often. So far this year it just hasn't worked out because everyone kept getting sick and I don't want to get her sick on top of the headaches she gets. Anyhoo, Mamaw gave us a pressure cooker for Christmas. I'm really excited to try and cook some pinto beans in it soon. She said they only take about 30 minutes to cook in the pressure cooker, which is a lot better than ALL day. Last time I tried to cook some they sprouted while I was presoaking the night before, and I had to throw them out. So I really can't wait to use it! Aunt Angie also stopped by during her lunch break to bring Lillipute her birthday present. She got her the CUTEST little chinese pajamas. I put them on her for bed tonight. After everyone left Lily put on her dress up clothes and danced for awhile in the hallway.  She said she was doing ballet.

Productive Day!!!

Today has been a good day. I was able to work out on the wii and start this blog and a work blog with Mom. Plus, I was able to do some laundry and clean the house. It seemed to be fairly productive day. I love when I have those. Most days all I'm able to do is potty training, diaper changing, clothes changing, feedings, and some light cleaning. We turned off the cable this week, so maybe this will fair out well for me. The kids are doing some adjusting though. It's like taking their nicotine away (well Lily's.) She's been watching a lot of the same movies over. She seems to get bored after a little bit and goes to play. YAY!!! Hopefully we won't raise tv zombies after all!!! Right now we have no channels at all, until Aaron gets back from his trip to hook up the basic channels we already get in our internet connection through Comcast. It's been hard on me to not get to watch Martha every morning, and I missed the premiere of House the other night. Oh well, I'll watch it online in a few days when it comes out. Mom and I started a work blog today! It combines our work together for one blog. Here's a link, http://anatomyofadesignhound.blogspot.com . It's gonna focus on her design studio, my photography studio, refinished furniture we do, and neat finds! I'm really excited.
